INTRODUCTION: IS IMA LEECH IN?

So I'm a leech, sue me. I mean, when you're on a board like
Rune Stone BBS, you HAVE to be a leech. Boards like Rune Stone,
are what turned me into a kn0wledge phreak in the first place.
I mean, you log-in, you hit 'A' to advance past the stats. Out
of respect for the SysOp, you hit 'R' and read through a few
messages, and even 'P'ost 1 or 2, but behind all of these
superfluous actions, the energy which is charging you...the energy
which has prompted you to make a cross-country call during
business hours on a Wednesday...is the Philes.

The Philes...What's new today? What am I gonna learn about this
time? You  hit 'N' and the New Files scroll past your anticpating
eyes seemingly forever. With every new screen is at least a half
a dozen Philes you never heard of and must have. Some are too good
to be true:

   nbk-id2.zip :    3k:NaTuRaL BoRN KiLLeRs
                       ³ ÛÜ  Û ÛßßßÜ Û Üß ³
                       ³ Û ßÜÛ ÛßßßÜ ÛßÜ  ³
                       ³ ß   ß ÛÜÜÜß ß  ß ³
                       ³Killing Caller ID#³
                       ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

In the back of your mind you know it's a sham because the files only
3k long and 2.5k of it's GOTTA be SPAM. But you  say "Fuck it!, I
gotta check it out." You hit SPACE a coupla times  and ad it to the
Batch. Finally once you've filled you're Batch up....'D', it's like
heaven.  You're slightly annoyed by the following questions, but you
just [CR] past them.  You're looking so a forward to your new found
bundles of informational joy, you're only slightly pissed that for
some reason you only connected at 14.4k...during business hours....
on Wednesday. When you're download is through, you hit 'G' and then
'G' again and you're outta there. And for me, even before I've dropped
carrier, I've got the first file open and I'm reading through it. The
experience is almost religious.

LOSING MY RELIGION

"[de, de, de] The party you are calling does not except blocked
calls.  Please either call from an un-blocked line, or dial
your Long Distance Operator for assistance. [click]"

What the...

"[de, de, de] the party you are calling" [slam]

"Fuck! Merc you #$#$%$%$&*^%%$%$$%#@@#@$%&*$#@!"

That was the day my heart sank. I'll never forget it, Monday, November
 6, 1995, 10:28am. I remember going into a  slight panic attack, but
then calmly reclaiming my wits. I said,
"alright, it said to call the Operator. Lets see...Hello Operator,
could you connect me to 203-832-8441?"

Boy, what a relief it was to hear that carrier.

"I'll just enter ATA....whoa! Connect you fuckin thing! What the fuck
....[click] Operator could you connect me to.."

And that was the way of the walk for that day. After three tries I
gave up and for three weeks went through withdrawls from Rune Stone
BBS. Finally I couldn't take it any more.

Finally! All that because SOMEBODY wanted that little extra bit of
security. ;> But that's alright...and this would have been then end
of this little adventure except for one little tidbit that reared it's
ironic head the very next day:

From: The Gazette Telegraph / Thursday, November 30, 1995

See Calls Coming from a THOUSAND MILES AWAY!
         --------------------------------------------
Now Caller ID Work With LONG DISTANCE TOO...

Caller ID has always been the perfect way for identifying
callers before you pick up the phone. Now it's going to be
even better. That's because on December 1st, 1996, long
distance carriers will pass caller information to your Caller ID
unit. you will be able to see who's calling from most locations
There will be some calls that will display as "Out of Area,"
  due to technical configurations.
Callers can block information from being passed by pressing
*67 (1167 on rotary phones) before the place the call. This is
  per call blocking.
TO UNBLOCK A BLOCKED LINE, FOR ONE CALL ONLY, CALLERS JUST
PRESS *82 (1182 on rotary phones). Of course, your current
blocking capabilities will not change. For more information call
US WEST or your long distance carrier.

  USWEST Communications.

Ah, the irony of somethings...oh well, see ya on Rune without a hassle.
